Her role as Lisa McDowell, a romantic comedy about coming to America (1988) and its sequel Coming 2 America (2021), is her most well-known. Headley has been seen in the films The Preacher's Wife (1996) and Johnson Family Vacation (2004). Headley was a regular on-air character on All My Children, an ABC daytime soap drama. She was the detective Mimi Reed from 1991 to 1994. She was the lead actress in the Fox drama series 413 Hope St. (1997-1998) and was awarded a NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Actress in the Drama Series. From 2014 until 2016 Headley played the role of villain Jennifer Sallison in the Oprah Winfrey Network primetime soap series The Haves and the Have Nots.
